2009 Tri-County Invite:
Another Growth Spurt
for the Young Indians ?????????
With just nine seniors on the track team this spring, the WFHS Indians have been struggling to find their identity. Due to a slew of injuries, illnesses, accidents, and other disasters, the boys from Wega have been missing an average of eight athletes from every meet this season.
So it has been a serious period of growth for a lot of the younger track athletes as each meet has come and gone. Add into the equation that some of the kids missing meets have been Most Valuable Athletes for the team, and you really have a confusing diversity of athletes to work with.
With that in mind, it is little wonder the boys, especially, have struggled to date. And yet, have they been struggling, or just being forced to grow up sooner than many of them should needed to???
To be honest this gang of 44, has been improving across the boards because they have to in order to be competitive. There are no longer the Seniors who graduated in 2008 to have their back and cover up any weaknesses. The 2009 Edition of Wega Track is on their own, in that regards.
And it show up in the times and efforts, but not always in the final score. These kids are diligently preparing for the CWC Championships on May 16 in Wittenberg in a big way.
For the record, the boys finished 9th out thirteen teams at last Thursday's Plainfield Invitational. They finished 6th out of eight CWC Schools, both large and small divisions. But, and there's the rub. But.....fifteen personal records and season bests were established in the effort. It was an impressive meet from the improvement standard. Places were not over abundant for the Indians, but......
Chris Chase captured 7th in the shot put with the best toss of his life. Cody Wilz placed 8th in the long with the best jump of his life in an event he just started doing this spring, out of necessity. All four relay teams recorded the best times of the year and all four placed for points. Two fifth place scoring efforts and two seventh place finishes for the relays. Chris Miller is rounding into low hurdle form and took home points for seventh place in the 300 hurdles. And Cody Wilz pulled off the biggest shocker of the night running in lane 8 to capture 5th place in the 200 dash, another event he only started doing this spring.
Cody had a really good night placing in two relays to go along with his two individual places. Chris Miller also helped in the 400 and 800 relays and Gideon Wilz set two season bests in addition to helping the 3200 relay to a solid place. These three young men were chosen as the most outstanding Indians of the meet.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the 2009 Lady Indians competed short handed due to injuries and illness, as well. The girls finished fifth of the thirteen schools in the meet and third among CWC schools, behind Witt-Birnamwood and Wild Rose. But, as with the boys, being short-handed only provides an opportunity to step up for these youngsters. Yes, the team is led by the Fantastic Four, Katherine Cloninger, Devery DeSantis, Brenda Paider, and Lynn Zeinert. But.... and here we go again, the four seniors can't carry the whole load to make the team successful. The production needs to be, and has been to this date, spread around to the entire team.
Places were not always golden for the Lady Indians, but they were right there competing every step of the way. In fact, the girls from Wega won just one individual event and one of the four relay events as they battled their way to fifth in the meet.
In both gold medal efforts, and many of the other medal winning efforts, the Fantastic Four had a huge impact on the results going towards Wega.
Katherine Cloninger went out and dominated her special event, the 400 Meter Dash, winning with her best time of the year so far, 1:02.46. Katherine also anchored the 1600 meter relay to a year's best time and a bronze medal. As if Puma had not already done enough, she captured third in the high jump and 200 meter dash. Can anyone say, "Good Job Katherine"? Say it with me now, "Good job, Katherine"
Say it with me now, "Good job Devery". Devery DeSantis anchored the 400 meter relay to the only other gold medal captured by the Lady Indians. Taylor Tomaszewski, Amanda Miller, Carlie Akey, and the little blonde girl circled the track with a season best time of 55.52 seconds, winning the one-lap race by over a second. This was a huge win for the girls. Devery also anchored the 800 relay team of Dacia Goetsch, Miller, and Akey to a third place finish with another season best time, 1:57.32.
The Senior hand was definitely in place on the 3200 meter relay as Lynn and Brenda brought the foursome home with another season's best good enough for fourth place, just missing the medal stand. It's plain to see the Fantastic Four are right in the middle of almost everything. The senior girls are defintely the the straw that stirs the drink on this year's Lady Indians track team.
But they are not alone in their efforts. Not by any stretch of the imagination. Amanda Miller placed high in the 100 dash. Dani Johnson was huge in the 300 hurdles just getting nipped for the gold medal as she ran the race of her life. Dani also threw in a thirty foot triple jump to help the cause. Ellen Schroeder threw points into the pool in the 800 and 1600 meter runs. And jackie Beyer went totally ballistic in the 3200 meter run placing fourth in the meet. It was almost thirty seconds better than Jackie has ever done in the 3200 before. Say it with me, "Good Job, Jackie".
It was a solid, total team effort as the girls once again proved they are very much able to "Chick Up" when the going gets tough. All in all, the Tri-County Invite once again proved to be a big checkmark in the success column for the Lady Indians as they grow into the contenders role at the May 16th CWC Large Championships to be held in Wittenberg.
Here are all the results from the 2009 Tri-County Invite. Wega-Fremont results are in bold lettering.
