2009 Cross Country Practices Begin With Temendous Enthusiasm

The 2009 Weyauwega-Fremont High School Cross Country season has officially gotten under way, and thus far the big word out of the team's training camp is ENTHUSIASM, with a capital E.
Coach Arnie Behnke, in his 27th year at the helm, is impressed with the excitement being generated by the entire team. Maybe it is not the biggest squad in school history, but the enthusiasm and excitement the harriers are displaying is amazing.
Especially in light of all of the difficulties the team suffered through a year ago, this team has its eyes on bigger and better things for 2009.
In just one way, you can see the difference from a year in a nutshell. A year ago, just three boys answered the opening traiining whistle. The Wega-Fremont boys team ran the full complement of seven athletes in just two meets all year long. In 2008m the first three contests of the year saw the Indians field just three athletes, not even a complete team to qualify for a team score.
In 2009, the team has seven boys in training camp already, and there are more waiting in the wings for school to start. Hopefully a few other good men will show up before then. But the boys will field a full team and that will immediately make them competitive in the area.
The girls are also looking at a good urnout as training camp includes seven youn ladies led by the only senior, Captain Alyssa Keller. The other captains leading the way for the Wega-Fremont harriers are Ellen and Joanna Schroeder for the girls, and Jake Kuenzi for the boys.
In addition Coach Nick Winn started the middle school cross country season on Tuesday and the middle school squad numbers a solid ten runners. The girls have a full team, while the boys are still searching for a few more to join the crowd.
