Coach Behnke Introduces a Crivitz High School Legend

August 14, 2009
By wfrunning Behnke of Weyauwega-Fremont High School

Pete Banaszak, a member of;

the Crivitz High School Class of 1962,

AND a member of the

was home in Crivitz, Wisconsin this past weekend.

In 1962, Crivitz High School, in Crivitz, Wisconsin graduated Pete Banaszak. Four years later, the University of Miami Hurricanes graduated Pete Banaszak. In 1966, the Oakland Raiders drafted CHS graduate Pete Banaszak, and the rest is history as Pete played thirteen seasons in the NFL and all were with the Raiders.

Pete played in two Super bowls for the Raiders, winning the Championship in 1975. Pete became over time the 4th leading rusher in Oakland Raider history, and currently hold the team record for rushing touchdowns with 52 in his storied career. He is also the third leading scorer in Raider team history.

Meanwhile, back at Crivitz High School, a mild uproar was taking place as Green Bay Packer fans of Pete Banaszak all hoped for a great game by the Crivitz alumni, but a Packer victory. In Super Bowl II, that's exactly what they got as Pete had a great game for the Raiders, who were beaten 33-14 by the Vince Lombardi led Green Bay Packers.

In 1970, Crivitz High School started an athletic and scholarship award handed out to the outstanding senior student athlete. Every year since, the Crivitz Wolverine Booster Club has named a Pete Banaszak Award recipient. Since 1983, there have been boys and girls honored each year.

Saturday evening, May 30, 2009 marked the 40th year for the Pete Banaszak Award to be handed out, and this just happened to be Pete's number for the University of Miami and the Oakland Raiders. Pete was contacted, and agreed to come back as the guest speaker and to hand out the trophies to the fortieth year winners.

Weyauwega-Fremont Track & Cross Country Coach, Arnie Behnke was the first ever winner of the Pete Banaszak Award back in 1970. Coach Behnke and almost three dozen past winners were at the ceremony honoring Mr. Banaszak, who will have his Crivitz football number retired this fall at one of the home football games. Coach Behnke was responsible for introducing the main speaker of the evening.

The Crivitz Booster Club, led by President Jon Behnke, put on a whale of a show, putting on a spaghetti dinner, and invited all the old award winners to return for this historic ceremony commemorating the first forty years of the highest award given to any Crivitz Student-Athlete.

Here is the list of the Pete Banaszak Award Winners at Crivitz High School.
